Your estimate

Revenue lost while unable to work...
Board fees plus catch-up CE...
Total estimated cost of the lapse...
Times the cost of an on-time renewal...

Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

Letting a professional license expire rarely costs just the late fee. Depending on the board, you may be barred from working until reinstatement clears, owe penalty and reapplication fees, and have to make up continuing education hours before you can practice again. Most people underestimate the total because the pieces show up separately over several weeks.

This estimator adds up the pieces you enter: revenue lost for each day you cannot legally work, the penalty and reinstatement fees your board charges, and the cost of any catch-up CE hours. It then compares that total with a normal on-time renewal so you can see the multiple. It does not guess your board's fees; you supply them from your board's published fee schedule.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your average daily revenue or billings and the number of days you expect to be unable to work while the license is lapsed.
  2. Add the combined late and reinstatement fees from your board's fee schedule, plus any extra CE hours and their cost per hour.
  3. Enter your normal renewal fee to see how many times more expensive a lapse is than renewing on time.

What the math assumes

  • Lost revenue is daily revenue multiplied by days unable to work, with no partial recovery from rescheduled clients or colleagues covering for you.
  • Penalty and reinstatement fees are entered by you from your board's fee schedule; nothing is assumed about any specific state, board or profession.
  • Catch-up CE cost is extra hours multiplied by your cost per hour; the time spent taking those courses is not counted as lost revenue.
  • The cost multiple divides the total lapse cost by your normal on-time renewal fee; if that fee is zero the multiple shows as 0.
  • Indirect costs such as reputational harm, client churn or employer discipline are not included.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my board's late and reinstatement fees?

Most state licensing boards publish a fee schedule on their website, usually under renewal or reinstatement. If your license type has several tiers, use the tier that applies to you and add every separate fee line.

Does the estimate include lost income while I take catch-up CE?

No. It only counts days you are barred from working. If you will also lose billable time completing courses, add those days to the days unable to work field.

How many days should I enter for days unable to work?

Use the time between discovering the lapse and the day your board confirms reinstatement. Processing times vary widely by board, so check your board's stated turnaround and add a margin for mailing, review or a required hearing.
